The, 1984 ) And Juice By Ernest Dickerson - 987 Words
Both The Brother from Another Planet (John Sayles, 1984) and Juice (Ernest Dickerson, 1992) share the similar purpose of Blaxploitation which redefine the critical perspective about the stereotypical good and evil ideologies of the African Americans and reveal the blacksââ¬â¢ position in American society. However, by mobilizing close textual analysis on both films Brother and Juice, as well as the articles from Janani Subramanian and Kenneth Chan, I want to argue that the diversities of the films genres endow distinctive approaches to address the issue. In the Brother, the science fiction genre serves as a mask which provides the chance to dodge the seriousness of facing the racial issue directly by disguising the black identity under an alienated character, yet endows the possibilities to embrace the topic underneath it. Whereas the action genre in Juice can presents more radically about the conflicts between the African American youths with the society and themselves on the dail y life base because the violence element is granted and expected in an action movie. By comparing and analyzing the social and political position of blacks in American society in two films, we can come to a better understand how the allowance towards alienation and violence elements reflects distinctively on science fiction and action movie genres. The property of science fiction establishes an environment of a pure fantasy which undermines the seriousness of the discrimination issue by employing

Truths Exposed in John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men Essay
Truths Exposed in Of Mice and Men John Steinbecks timeless novel Of Mice and Men is a somewhat controversial story of the hardships of life. To illustrate these hardships, Steinbeck takes the reader back to an era of bankruptcies, migrant workers, and drifters. Today, this time, the 1930s, is branded the Great Depression. The quest of George and Lennie, two migrant workers, is an example of the dilemma of thousands of homeless and unemployed men in America during the Great Depression era (Ito 39). The harsh circumstances presented by the Great Depression reveal a darker side of human nature. In order to survive, a mans priority had to be himself. Through his characters, Steinbeck exposes truths about people and life inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Curley misjudges Lennie, thinking that since Lennie is retarded he will be able to easily whoop him and make himself look good for beating a much bigger man. As seen through the character of Crooks, the need for interaction with other people is demonstrated. The setting of this story perfectly emphasizes the theme of mans need for companionship, or, as Donald Pizer calls it, fear of apartness (Owens 145). Due to the racial discrimination of that time, Crooks, a disabled black man, goes through life all alone. When retarded Lennie, who is too innocent to show bigotry towards anyone, starts an exchange with Crooks, Crooks immediately opens his heart to Lennie. Steinbeck writes, Crooks scowled, but Lennies disarming smile defeated him. Come on in and set a while, Crooks said... His tone was a little more friendly (Steinbeck 69). Though Lennie is not bright enough to comprehend any of Crooks feelings, to just have another person there to talk to is adequate for Crooks. Donald Pizer, a noted critic, agrees when he says, One of the themes of Of Mice and Men is that men fear loneliness, that they need someone to be with and to talk to who will o ffer understanding and companionship (Owens 146). This need for contact with others is somewhat incongruous when compared to the world at present. Today inequity is not nearly the problem it once was, yet people frequently choose to immerse themselves in front of aShow MoreRelatedJohn Steinbeck s Social Responsibility1747 Words à |à 7 PagesUnited States are being treated extremely fairly, and they are receiving the help that they need. In my short life span of seventeen years there have been more global issues that have arisen than in the last 50 years all together. The world is becoming more technologically advanced and people are starting to ask questions and really focus on the problems not only occurring in present time, but also that may occur down the road. In todayââ¬â¢s society people are becoming more interested in the world and are becoming more educated. I also except Honors College to be able to explain to m e why these problems are occurring and how our world has come to this point. I would like to be able to know why the United States is in such debt and how it rose to seventeen trillion dollars in such a short time. I want to be able to know why, so I can think of possible solutions and ways to cut government spending. Our national debt is a huge issue for me because my generation is going to be the start of who is paying it back. In America, debt is one of the biggest problems our government is facing right now, but it also is effecting other countries just as severely. I believe that we must learn why these problems are occurring to be able to fully comprehend the situation and to be able to have any chance of fixing it. So many problems are starting to surface and there are new threats everyday. Specifically in America, terrorism is the problem that I worry about most. In my lifetime i have seen more cruel acts of terrorism than my parents have ever seen in their past fifty years. This can only make me think if we can not find a solution to this or any other problem now, what struggles are my own children going to face and what will it be like for them in 30 years.
